Job Description

Desktop & Infrastructure Engineer

Location: London – Moorgate/Liverpool Street (office-based)
Contract: Initial 6-month fixed-term contract, with the potential to extend for a further 6 months
Start date: As soon as possible

About the Role

We're recruiting on behalf of a leading independent investment bank. Their integrated business brings together investment banking, research, institutional sales and execution services for quoted companies, growth businesses and institutional investors. They advise more UK public companies than any other independent investment bank, drawing on specialist sector knowledge, strong investor relationships and extensive public-markets expertise.

They're looking for an experienced Desktop & Infrastructure Engineer to join their London-based IT team on an initial 6-month fixed-term contract.

Reporting to the Head of Infrastructure, this is a broad, hands-on position combining high-quality desktop support with responsibility for the stability, security and performance of the IT infrastructure. The successful candidate will act as the senior technical escalation point for colleagues providing 1st and 2nd-line support, taking ownership of more complex issues through to resolution.

The role will support employees at all levels of the firm, so strong technical expertise, excellent communication skills and a responsive, service-focused approach will be essential.

Key Responsibilities

Act as the escalation point for complex 2nd and 3rd-line desktop and infrastructure issues

Diagnose and resolve hardware, software, operating-system, connectivity and performance problems

Provide responsive and professional desktop support to employees and senior stakeholders

Administer and support Microsoft 365, Windows, Active Directory and Entra ID environments

Support endpoint configuration, software deployment, patching and device management

Maintain and troubleshoot servers, networks, virtual environments, storage and cloud services

Monitor infrastructure availability, capacity, performance and security

Support backup, recovery, antivirus and business-continuity processes

Manage user access, permissions and security controls in line with company policies

Support meeting-room technology, mobile devices and remote-access solutions

Own incidents through to resolution and undertake root-cause analysis for recurring issues

Maintain accurate asset records, technical documentation and operational procedures

Liaise with third-party suppliers and technology partners

Support infrastructure changes, upgrades and improvement initiatives

Identify opportunities to improve system reliability, security and the overall user experience

Provide wider desktop and operational IT support when required

Skills and Experience

Strong experience as a Desktop & Infrastructure Engineer, 3rd Line Support Engineer or in a similar hands-on position

Broad knowledge of Microsoft desktop, server and cloud technologies

Experience supporting Windows 10/11, Microsoft 365, Active Directory and Entra ID

Good knowledge of networking technologies, including TCP/IP, DNS, DHCP, VPNs and Wi-Fi

Experience with endpoint management, software deployment and patching tools

Knowledge of virtualisation, backup, monitoring and disaster-recovery technologies

Strong diagnostic and troubleshooting skills, with the ability to resolve complex issues independently

Experience using ticketing systems and working within incident, problem and change-management processes

A strong understanding of information security, access management and infrastructure controls

Excellent communication skills and confidence supporting both technical and non-technical colleagues

Strong organisational and prioritisation skills, particularly when managing business-critical incidents

A proactive, collaborative and service-oriented approach

Desirable Experience

Previous experience within investment banking, financial services or another regulated environment

Experience providing high-quality support to senior stakeholders and business-critical users

Relevant Microsoft, cloud, networking or IT service-management qualifications

Experience using PowerShell or other tools to automate routine administrative tasks

This opportunity would suit an experienced engineer who enjoys variety, takes ownership of problems and can provide dependable technical support within a fast-paced, professional environment.
